Bansuri flute player and composer, Catherine Potter is carving out a distinctive niche in the international world music scene with her sophisticated music, the fruit of a long musical journey between Montreal and Mumbai where the Canadian artist has been studying the art of North Indian classical music with the renowned Pt. Hariprasad Chaurasia for close to 20 years. Now, considered “Canada's master bansuri flautist”, Catherine Potter debut album of classical ragas, Bansuri, was released in 1998. She has performed solo and along side great musicians of the tradition in both Canada and India.
Duniya Project is a unique world music ensemble which melds ancient and current traditions, faithfully rendering the intricate beauty of Indian ragas and talas while creating jazzy atmospheres and enticing rhythms with forays into flamenco, funk and gamelan. Duniya, which means ‘world’ evokes as much the international flavour of Potter’s compositions as the diversity of these talented musicians. The project presently features Ravi Naimpally on tabla, Nicolas Caloia on double–bass, Thom Gossage on drums along with different guest guitarists including Jorge Martinez, Jean-Marc Hébert, John Gzowski and Joy Anadasivam.
Catherine Potter - Duniya Project has played at key stages in Canada and abroad (Montreal International Jazz Festival, Kolkata's Congo Square Jazz Festival, East-West Festival in Bangalore, Ottawa International Jazz Festival, the Festival du Monde Arabe and Toronto's Harbourfront to name a few). Several of their concerts have been recorded and broadcast nationally by both Radio-Canada and CBC. Released to critical acclaim in Canada in 2006, Catherine Potter’s Duniya Project is now available in India on the Music Today label under the title Following in the Footsteps of Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia.
